The East Hill Lift

The East Hill Lift Hastings Funicular Railway
The East Hill Lift is one of two funicular railways in Hastings. The other is the West Hill Lift.

The East Hill Lift is probably the most popular and most photographed of the two simply because it is much more open to public gaze than it's West Hill sister.

The East Hill Lift Hastings Funicular RailwayThe lift was opened in 1902. Wikipedia currently states the year of opening as 1903 but certainly the majority of web sites state 1902.

In the beginning the lift operated using a "water balance system". However in the 1970's this was changed to an electric motor system.

2007 saw the lift closed due to a major fault (some reports attribute this to a lightning strike).

After repairs and a refurbishment to the cars the line was reopened on 27th March 2010
